Doug's post from the World Cup
Aug 2, 2011  Day 1 at the World Cup in Ogden UtahThere are 260 archers from 46 countries here. China, The Netherlands, El Salvador, Russia, Iran and many more, a real United Nations thing going on. We had official practice, accreditaiotns, equipment inspection, and our team Captians meeting. The level of shooting and equipment "tuning" done by the athletes and their coaches is quite overwhelming, I have alot to learn. Even meetings are a challenge as everybody has an accent and you really have to listen so you understand what is going on, things and schedules can change quickly. I will be with the Womens recurve tean for the week, Khatuna Lorig, Jennifer Nichols, Miranda Leek and Kristin Braun.  Coach Lee has the recurve men, Coach Mel the compound men and Coach Cindy the compound women. Tomorrow morning is our 72 arrow qualification round, followed in the afternoon by the start of the team rounds. The city of Ogden has laid out the Red Carpet for us. The venue, hotels, restaurants..... are all great. So, long day coming tomorrow, talk to you then.
Aug 3, 2011 Day 2 at the World Cup in Ogden UtahThis morning was the qualification rounds for all divisions. The United States Team qualified first in all 4 divisions, the first time this has happened for USA Archery. The afternoon saw the start of the mixed team rounds for recurve. Our team is Brady Ellison and Miranda Leek. They tied the World record with their performance today!! Tomorrow the elimination rounds continue, we hope to have an archer in all four finals along with teams in the finals Friday and Saturday night also. The finals will be held in the baseball stadium and are to be broadcast on ESPN3. This is pretty awesome stuff, having a great time and learning a ton. We will be going on a tour of the Hoyt and Easton manufacturing facilities here in Salt Lake on Friday, too bad Dano, you should be here for that!!
Aug 5, 2011  What a day!! Today, actually tonite because we start at 6:30PM, the recurve finals were held in Ogden Utahs Triple A baseball stadium. We advanced the Womens Team into the Bronze medal match, Mens Team into the Gold Medal match, Mixed team into the Gold medal match, and mens individual into the Gold and Bronze medal matches. ESPN3 was here and the stadium was electric, pretty cool stuff!!  The Womens team was defeated by the team from China who shot very well, but then the USA got rolling. We won Gold in the Recurve Team, Gold in the Recurve Mens Team, and Bronze and Gold in the Mens Individual Matches. This tournament runs by the same format as the Olympic Games will be held next year so it is very interesting to see and experience how it is done. The Medal ceremonies are awesome.Tomorrow night is the Compound Finals and it should be quite an evening with Rodger Willet going for his 3rd Gold Medal in the World Cup this year. Learning alot about how International Sports work and meeting alot of really cool people. Dano, todays tour of the Hoyt and Easton factories would have blown your mind!! They raffeled off 2 Hoyt Bows of your choice, the winners were pretty excited!!
Hello and welcome back to Points to the Cross Archery Club!
We certainly hope you all have had an excellent summer. It’s nearly fall and while lot of you have been trying to keep up with all of our excursions with and for USA Archery, many of you don’t know what we’ve been up to . So, we thought you’d like to know what’s been going on with us and the club.
Since Doug’s election as an International Team Staff coach for USA Archery last February (2010), a lot has transpired. You all remember the excitement of his first “trip” to Medellin, Colombia (South America) in December ; well the excitement continued right into 2011. On January 1, 2011 Doug was selected to be the eastern region JOAD rep for USA Archery. Then another announcement came from USA Archery, just before coaching the team in Santo Domingo this past March; he was selected as a JDT. (Jr. Dream Team) coach, as well.
So besides coaching, we (both Doug and I) are judges as well. In March we ended our indoor judging at the National Indoor Archery Championships and National JOAD Archery Indoor Championships in Harrisonburg, VA. From there Doug flew to Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) to coach World Archery Americas Event.
The spring and summer was a whirlwind of judging and coaching along with holding courses to certify archery instructors for camps and other youth activities.
The outdoor archery events began; in April, Sue traveled to Florida to Judge at the Gator Cup. May proved to a busy month; Doug was the Director of Shooting at the Gold Cup in New Jersey. From there he was joined by (new judge) Tim to judge The United States Intercollegiate Archery Championships (USIAC's), in Harrisonburg, VA. June brought about the Nor-Easter, a USAT event in Massachusetts, which Sue attended as a judge. June brought about the Nor-Easter, a (USAT) U.S. Archery Team Qualifying event in Massachusetts; Sue attended as a judge.
During April, May, and June – in between judging events, we (Doug and Sue) taught Level 1 certifications courses in Syracuse, Oswego, 2 Girl Scouts camps; one in the Finger Lakes, the other in Dansville; and at Camp Hickory Hill in Varysburg, NY. Tim was recruited to be the lead archery instructor for 2 months for Camp Caribou up in Maine from mid June - August.
Then came our busiest month – July. We flew out to Sacramento, CA. for the JOAD Nationals, the premier archery event for youth archers in the USA. The Youth World Trails were also held during this event. Following that was a week of archery at Camp Hickory Hill in Varysburg for Doug. Upon Doug’s return from Camp Hickory Hill, we then left for Yankton, South Dakota for the US National Archery Championships and Easton/Hoyt World Open to be judges. Sue came back to instruct at SBTW – Summer’s Best Two Weeks - a 2 week summer camp program held in Penfield.
As part of USA Archery’s ITS, (International Team Staff) program Doug left right from South Dakota for Salt Lake City to be one of the coaches for the Archery World Cup. This is a world ranking event with 46 countries attending. Right after that was done he went to Virginia to be one of the coaches for a regional JOAD Camp. Doug’s next trip will be September 27- October 2; he was selected to be a judge at the first US Olympic Team Trials in Texas, followed by a trip to San Diego in late November to be a coach at this year’s last JDT(Junior Dream Team) camp. Now, keeping an eye on Dan Kelly – He’s been just as busy not as a judge or coach but as a competitive archer. Dan Kelly has competed at the Gator Cup in April, the Gold Cup in May, the Nor-Easter in June, and the National Archery Championships in July. He will be competing at the Olympic Trials in Texas at the end of September. Dan is currently ranked #36 in the country!! Congratulations to Dan Kelly.
We are preparing for the fall season. We will be shooting outdoors first then moving indoors later this fall. Outdoor registration is already posted. Continue to keep an eye on our website and facebook for additional updated information. We are looking forward to seeing all of you!
Thank you for your support of the club.
